Acrobatic Picas

Also called fish hawk, river hawk, and sea hawk,

Osprey of Spring

The Front Range’s abundante lakes and ponds provide this raptor’s favorite food source⏤fish! I see Osprey soaring in the air, sitting on tree snags on a regular basis. They dive into the water feet first, with their sharp tallons outstretched, and ready to snatch a fish feeding near the surface.

Osprey are a welcome sight as the first few return each April. Pairs find each other and rebuild their nests during the brief mating period. Eggs follow. At first the females stay with the eggs and babies while the male brings her fresh fish. By mid-summer, both the males and females return with fish for the hungry babies.
