Colorful Colorado Backroads

Where the pavement ends…

The state highways serve to get you from one place to another, while the small dirt roads act like arteries to the heart of the state! In the fall, brilliant yellow, gold, and orange aspens light the way.

Fall comes and goes quickly, but the season is not necessarily limited to a single week or weekend. By now, many of the leaves I saw will be on the ground. Brisk winds can take it toll in a short period. Other areas of the state will have their “moment” as the month of October advances. These photos were taken only a few days ago while on short trip to Colorado’s West Slope. Luckily, I hit many of the areas while the leaves were in their prime colors.

Several of the photos on this page were taken near Silverton, CO, but the bulk of them were taken on the narrow dirt road that connects Highway 130, just outside Paonia, to Crested Butte. The road passes through vast and rugged mountains as it travels over Hebler pass. If you are a fan of “leading lines”, this page is for you!
