Found in fairly large numbers in Colorado
Patience and Stealth…
From my past experiences, Great Blue Herons were quick to take flight if they felt any degree of human presence. Since moving Colorado’s Front Range, I’ve been able to find quite a few “photogenic Herons” that are more acclimated to humans. I’ve also found several Heron rookeries in the region. Knowing where the rookeries are located makes it easier to find them stalking their prey along the edges of nearby ponds and lakes.
The second gallery on this page features a Heron successfully fishing from a floating log.

This set of sequence shots shows the Heron patiently watching the fish. As it unknowingly swims close to the log, the Heron’s quick and accurate splash produces its morning meal.
