Macros and Close-Ups

Experimentation and Practice

Toys, Collectibles, & More!

Recently, I added two new lenses to my collection: Sony F/2.8 90mm Macro lens and an inexpensive TTArtisan F/1.4 50mm Tilt lens.  These are both “specialty” lenses that need a little practice and experimentation.

The photos on this page are mostly experimental captures executed in my dark basement. These whisical photos allowed me to dip my toes into close-up and macro photography. By adjusting the aperture, I am able to control the depth of field in creative ways. Over the next few months or years, I can dig deeper into macro photography.  For now, I can say I learned a lot doing these little projects!

Adaptalux: If you are interested in macro photograpny, check out Adaptalux’s nifty macro lighting systems! They are not cheap, but that are fun, versatile, and effective.

Additional Notes: The tilt lens works great for either repairing out of focus zones and perspective issues, or for forcing a very shallow depth of field. You can see this effect in the group of small clocks. The macro lens allows me to set up very close to a subject for some incredible details. The flexible Adaptalux lights allow me to add white, colored and infrared lights as needed and can be controlled with an app on my phone.
