Historic Colorado Mines
The mountainsides south of Silverton, CO are dotted with the remains of historic old mining structures. , Additionally, there are many piles of timber that were once mining structures that have succombed to the ravages of high country weather and the weight of the winter snows. Copper, silver, and gold mines can be found around other areas of the state.
Last fall, I spent a lot of time along the Million Dollar Highway. The picturesque Yankee Girl Mine, sits on the mountainside across the valley from the winding asphalt highway. This year, I made the slow trek to the mine. It was well worth the trip, but I’d love to go back when there were dramatic clouds and moody light.
I overheard a photo tour guide tell his samll group that the Yankee Girl Mine is the most photographed mine in the world. Maybe so, but I’m a bit skeptical of that stat. I found other mines along a four-wheel road north of Silverton. Currently, most of what remains is the concrete foundations of the many levels. A person told me the Sunnyside Mine was one of the two largest mines in the region. I tend to believe that statement. I’ll add a few more mine photos on this page soon…check back!
