Featuring the Stained Glass Windows in Colorado’s Oldest Church
Located just outside Antonito, CO, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church holds services for Conejos County and beyond.
A faded brown and white sign along State Highway 17 pointed to a small road and “Colorado’s Oldest Church”. A sign near the door let us know we were welcome to enter the historic structure. According to onsite documentaton, the still active church dates back to 1863.
While everything inside and outside the church is beautiful, I chose to concentrate on the twelve magnificent stained glass windows. We were there at mid-morning on a bluebird clear sky day, so each window lit up beautifully.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church was originally built as an adobe structure. Following a fire or two, today’s front facade is made of bricks. Most of the work over the years was built by local craftsmen and local suppliers.

The interior of the church feels both solemn and inspiring.
