Gathering for Migration
A fair number of White Pelicans spend their summer along the Front Range. They can be spotted at many of the lakes and ponds, often sharing space with Great Blue Herons and Canada Geese. As winter approaches, the pelicans gather before making their journey to warmer zones.
On this fall morning, I found roughly 80 White Pelicans milling around in the the early morning light at St. Vrain State Park on the east side of Longmont. It’s difficult to get an exact count with so many birds swimming and flying about.
As the first rays of the sun began to bathe the lake, I was able to capture a few dramatic shots ⏤ making the early morning excursion worth the effort.
