Rocky Mountain Elk

The Rut is ON!

Rocky Mountain National Park is famous for its elk. Moose, bighorn sheep, and black bears can stop traffic, but serious wildlife photographers flock to the park specifically for the elk. I now usnderstand why!

Elk photography here is a welcome change for me!  Back in Grand Teton National Park, elk are hunted in the National Forests around the edges of the park—and even inside some areas of the park. Over the decades, the became leary of humans, with the exception of the winter months on the National Elk Refuge. Elk are not hunted in RMNP.  Asa result calves grow up around humans. As a whole, elk here are extremely tolerant of two legged, camera toting tourists.
