Changing seasons along the Front Range
Spring Comes Early Here!
This year, the calendar identified the first day of Spring as March 20. In Jackson Hole, winter still has a firm grip on the area, but here in Loveland, it has felt like spring for weeks.
Changes are evident everywhere!. This page shows just a few of them. It can be warm one day and snow the next. In most cases, the new snow is gone by the next day. I like shorter and milder winters and wide range of subject matter.
A lot of people associate Robins with spring. They have been in this area most of the winter, but their breast feathers are turning bright orange again. Red-winged blackbirds have been seen in large numbers for quite a while. The yellow chests on many Meadowlarks are changing from dull yellow to bright yellow. The large bull Elk have been losing their antlers and will begin showing new growth. Turkeys finally have all of their feathers and are fanning to show for the females. Osprey and Pelicans are back. Herons and Eagles are rebuilding their nests. By the middle of the March, most lakes have already lost their frozen layers of ice and snow. Ducks and Geese are spreading out into all of the new areas of open water. Trees are budding. Residents can be seen cleaning their yards as their grass turns green. The garden centers at Lowes, Home Depot, WalMart and the area nurseries are busy stocking for spring and summer buyers. Garage Sale signs are seen on posts along the main roads. I expect Black Bears to be exiting their dens at any time. Yes, Spring is here and I am welcoming the changes!
