Historic Central Colorado Mining Town

St. Elmo, founded in 1880, is reported to be the best preserved of Colorado’s ghost towns. During its heyday, nearly 2000 hardy miners, businessmen, and family members settled in St. Elmo. The ghost town is accessible over good roads, roughly 20 miles southwest of Buena Vista.

Darla and I drove to St. Elmo on our return to Loveland. While many of my photos in the gallery are devoid of tourists, the town was quite busy. I had to be patient and work to eliminate the tourists. Additionally, I had wait for vehicles to move.

We arrived to St. Elmo at mid-day with clear blue skies. Now that I know “the lay of the land”, I’d like to go back for early morning light and less tourists. As always, I’d also want a few interesting clouds in the sky.
These photos were taken with a Sony A1 and a Tamron 35-150mm lens…a great combination.
