Functional & Decorative
Spot about any large barn, and chances are good you’ll find one or more cupolas resting along the top ridge. Functionally, cupolas let warm air escape the barn and let light in. Many cupolas resemble an upside down tea cup, hence the origin of the name. The photos in the gallery below illustrate their wide diversity in size, shape, and quality of construction. Cupolas are often made from the same materials as the barn structure itself. Extra large barns can have three or more cupolas. Most of these photos were taken in and around the Loveland area, however a few were captured in Idaho and Wyoming. Sometimes, I find the cupolas to be more interesting than the barn holding them up. Lastly, weathervanes, adorned with a variety of farm animals, can be found atop many of the region’s cupolas
