Treasure Trove of Textures!

Spring and Summer 2022 Photos

Rust & Textures

I am always on the lookout for rusty objects or structures that are clinglingly on helplessly against of nature’s forces. Mother Nature is relentless, and if given enough time, she usually wins.

Loveland Grain Elevator Fire Hydrant
Generator

This old turbine housing is an example of a piece of machinery that was once used to supply electricity to residents along the Big Thompson River and beyond. It now sits along three or four other turbines at a park next to the river. I am looking forward to finding hundreds more similar items in Colorado.

Cluttered Barn

In many cases, artists, designers, and photographers abide by the slogan “less is more”, or “simplicity is the key to good design”. Sometimes you just have to throw out the rules! I’ve also heard people say “less is a bore”.

Fire Hydrant

Fire hydrants are everywhere, standing like lonely soldiers just waiting for their time to come to the rescue.

Red Barn

I got up early to try to catch this beautiful old barn at first light. One of the trees was casting a shadow on the barn as the thin beam of light lit the grass in the foreground.

Storm Sewer

I probably have a thousand sewer cover and manhole cover photos. Some might suggest they are too “mundane”, but I have always like their unique character and textures.

Sewer Cover

I shot this one at first light after setting the aperture to F/2.8 to get a very shallow depth of field.

The Old Chevy

Old, rusting vehicles easily draw me in! One “good” vehicle can have dozens of worthwhile photos! I look for interesting compositions.

Chrome emblems come in a wide variety of sizes and styles. They often add a little character and context.

Most cupolas on the large old barns have slats that act as vents. This one lacks the slats, but still serves as a decorative vent none the less.

When I took this photo back in March, I had no idea that a few months later I would be sitting behind my computer in a new house and in another state! I took numerous photos of this old truck near Tetonia, ID over the years. I drove by it often on trips from Jackson to Rexburg, ID.  I like this one a lot. The snow surrounding this complicated subject simplified the background. Chirstmas was long past, but the wreath commemorated the seasonal event. The warmth from the heated metal was melting the nearby snow pack, and the morning sun obscured all detail from one of the windows.

I’ve been taking note of a lot of old vehicles and rusting and textured structures in the Loveland area. Some, like the old truck above, are on private property, but with my telephoto lenses, I can often get photos without trespassing.
