Front Range Barns and Homesteads

Ever Changing Subjects

Morning light along the front range can be magiacal!  The light is rich and vivid ⏤ it’s the payoff for losing a little sleep. Over the past three years, I’ve driven up and down most roads in the Loveland area. I’ve located a few dozen of my favorite barns and return to photograph them at various times of the year.

I prefer to capture photos with clouds. In almost all cases clouds add interest and character, even if they are light and lacey. Occasionally, I am able to capture stormy morning clouds, but most of the storm clouds develop during the day and explode in the late evening. Even without morning clouds, alpenglow can add color to an otherwise barren sky.

As the photos in this gallery illustrate, there can often be multiple angles and opportunities available for the same barn. Using a telephoto lens, I also enjoy taking the same subject from a variety of distances. As the summer season changes to fall and early winter, the same scene can morph into something completely different.

The photos on this page were taken with either a Sony A1 or a Sony A1 ii body and either a Sigma 60-600mm lens or a Tamron 35-150mm lens. Most of these photos were taken of “working farms” which often have at least some clutter. For my purposes, I don’t mind removing some of the posts, trash, or distracting elements in Lightroom or Photoshop.
